In what could be the comeback title for the series, EA has recently announced SSX: Deadly Descents is in development over at EA Canada.  The team is seeking to reinvent the franchise and make the game more than just snowboarding.  They are making a game that will have gamers attempt to survive the craziest mountains on Earth, while taking on human and AI opponents and trying their best to look good while doing it.  So far, only the Himalayas and Antarctica have been mentioned as locations, but I’m sure more will surface along with a few surprises.

Peter Moore, President at EA Sports said “An entire genre was born from the original SSX a decade ago, and it’s time to reboot one of the most popular franchises of all-time in an unpredictable and unexpected way.  Fans have been begging for this since the launch of this generation of consoles, and we have an experience that will be worth the wait.  This franchise has always been about racing, tricks, characters and fun – SSX: Deadly Descents will deliver all of that, and more, on a global scale, with rich online experiences, and with the sense of adventure never before imagined on a snowboard.”

I’ve been waiting for an SSX title to make its way to current gen platforms since SSX Tricky, and from what has been detailed so far, they are certainly on the right track.  EA really has their work cut out for them, but if they’re serious about this reimagining of a once great series, I could see them producing great results, just like how they brought back NBA Jam. I’m sure more info will become available the closer we get to PAX East 2011 (if not E3 2011), and it’s sure to get fans excited.
