Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, you can’t have failed to notice that Rockstar North have announced a new game in their mainstay series, Grand Theft Auto 5. As ever with a new GTA game, the rumours have been circling around regarding the story and characters for some time now.
However, all we have to go on is the trailer and the new screenshots released earlier this week, but I’m going to do my best to answer some of the questions and [probably] end up asking a whole lot more.
Where’s the game set?
Well the game is apparently set in Los Santos – the same Los Santos as was in GTA: San Andreas – but it will be split into 3 provinces called “The Greater Naranja Area” “Los Puerta” and “The Greater Los Santos” it will also apparently feature a huge countryside area. Although I am hoping it’s not going to be quite as big as it was in San Andreas as I used to constantly get lost in the countryside due to the size of it! (Although that might just say more about my map reading abilities than the game itself!)
Apparently the southern part of the map is blocked by impassable mountains and a fence to depict the US-Mexico border, players will not be able to pass through the fence although that could well be (and is probably quite likely to be) DLC.
Who do you play as?
Good question! The truth is we don’t really know yet. There is a couple of characters in the trailer (which you can see below) who you might be playing as. There is the guy in the car (you see him at around 25 seconds in) whose name is apparently Adrian and if most rumours are to be believed, that is who you play as. There is also the older looking guy (who you can see at around 40 seconds in) who to me looks a little like an older Tommy Vercetti (the main protagonist in GTA: Vice City). The voice you hear in the trailer talking about his life so far and why he ended up in Los Santos could also be the character you play as. However, to me he sounds a bit (or a lot) like Michael Madsen of Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs fame. And as we know, after Vice City, Rockstar have stayed away from well known actors for the main character voicing so it’s unlikely you’ll be playing as him, although just having Michael Madsen in the game is pretty cool!!
Will the police still ram me off the road?
If you break the law, yes they will. The police have always had worryingly little regard for human life in Grand Theft Auto, but in GTA5 the wanted levels will be slightly different than in previous versions.
1 star – police will follow you on foot and try to make an arrest. No sirens, no car chases.
2 star – police will still attempt to make an arrest. If a weapon is drawn then the police will begin opening fire. Police will use stun guns if a weapon is not drawn.
3 star – Car chases begin and the police don’t care how they stop you….they just want to stop you.
4 star – road traps, radio stations and much more hostile police. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 24 in game hours for someone matching your description.
5 star – shoot to kill. Arrest only made if it’s very possible (and presumably easy). Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 48 in game hours for someone matching your description. Some missions become unavailable if you are wanted.
6 star – Military vehicles come after you. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 72 in game hours for someone matching your description. Again, some missions will be unavailable if you are wanted.
What about the music?
Well, the radio stations you’ve come to know and love in GTA will still be there. Although there has been no official word on what music will be in the game, although you can pretty much guarantee the genre’s – they’ll likely be a classic rock station, a heavy metal station, a pop music station, a classical music station and a dance music station – As for the DJ’s there’s no word yet on who might be a DJ, I’m just hoping Axl Rose doesn’t reappear as I didn’t particularly like him in San Andreas. There has been some news on the radio’s though and that is that when you are wanted the DJ’s will issue warning’s about you which will certainly add a sense of realism about the game. Also the DJ’s will give real time traffic reports telling you to avoid certain roads etc, which again will give the feel of a real life living and breathing city.
What vehicles can I drive?
Well there hasn’t been a whole lot of anything about the vehicles yet. Although there is a list of vehicles doing the rounds on the internet at the moment which was apparently lifted from the source code of Max Payne 3, although whether any, or all of the vehicles listed will be in the game is anyone’s guess. The only thing we do know, looking at the screenshots, is that there will almost certainly be bicycles in the game for you to ride.
From the recent screenshots which you can see below, you have the ability to fly aeroplanes and according to Rockstar themselves, all aeroplanes in the game are flyable with the exception of passenger planes presumably so they can avoid any bad press about being pro-terrorism (good move rockstar). I just hope that the planes are going to be easier to fly than the Dodo!!
What about multiplayer?
Multiplayer will definitely be returning in GTA 5 and will also include the ability to have your gang from Max Payne 3 imported to the GTA 5 multiplayer which is a pretty cool feature.
So, what do you want to see in GTA 5? What sort of music do you want to have in the game? What famous actors do you want to have in the game? Let us know in the comment section below. And don’t forget to check out the trailer and screenshots below.
