Doom 3 BFG Edition Logo Regular visitors to slimgamer.com would have read an older article I wrote on the wonders of DOOM, if you haven’t, first of all why not? And second of all, you can read it here.

After you’ve read it or if you’ve read it before, you will know that I am a huge fan of ID software’s DOOM, the game which started my passion in video games and defined a genre. There isn’t a first person shooter available today which hasn’t in some way been influenced by the greatness that is DOOM. It all started back in 1993 with the release of DOOM on PC, however I didn’t play it until it hit the playstation and it scared me….Stop laughing! It was a scary game back then! However DOOM got truly scary when DOOM 3 was released and the game is considered a master-class in how to make a great scary game. Many gamers (myself included) had been hoping for a 4th installment of the franchise, but it seems that has been canned but there is still some good news, as yesterday Bethesda Softworks announced the release of DOOM 3 BFG Edition which has me very excited!

DOOM 3 BFG Edition has been remastered for PS3 and Xbox 360 and will mark the first time that DOOM has been available on PS3. It will feature both DOOM 3 and the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack and offer greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of DOOM to truly scare you. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, ‘The Lost Mission’ which will feature seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have you on the edge of your seat with excitement and perhaps fear.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition has been optimized in 3D, and features 5.1 surround sound (which is a must on DOOM 3 but WILL scare you!) Xbox 360 Achievements, PS3 Trophies, improved rendering and lighting and a new checkpoint system allowing for smoother progression through the game. ID software have also fine tuned the controls to bring the intensity of DOOM single-player and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and DOOM 3 will also feature a new armour-mounted flash-light, allowing players to both illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.

John Carmack, technical director at ID Software said “DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at it’s release. Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it”

As a special bonus, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM and DOOM 2 making it the definitive collection of DOOM ever.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition is scheduled for release in the Autumn and is looking like being the ultimate version of DOOM there has ever been and has this writer very excited for it! Check out the trailer below and let us know in the comments section whether you’ll be picking it up when it releases.
