Expansive role playing games like The Elder Scrolls aren’t for everyone. If you really want to experience a game like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim there are hours upon hours of content that you have to sift through. On top of that, the systems in RPG’s haven’t historically been friendly to the casual gamer. Oblivion was a great game, but Skyrim looks like it is improving on pretty much every facet of the series. A lot of RPG’s have trouble attracting more than dedicated fans, but The Elder Scrolls has always done a decent job of being somewhat accessible. Skyrim has arguably become the biggest release of this holiday season, and more than any other game Skyrim is one RPG that everyone should play or at least give a try. Here’s why.
5) Improved Combat
Oblivion had great melee combat; it was brutal at times, fun, and pretty easy to do. However, sometimes it did become a little troublesome to switch between your different spells and weapons on the fly. In Skyrim that’s not a problem. You can equip any weapon or spell you want on either of your hands. If you want to use two swords in combat you can, you can also use two fire spells, or even two shields. The combat like everything else, just adds even more to the overriding theme that Skyrim is building. The freedom of the player.
Combat in Skyrim just seems to flow better, it’s easy to fight how you want providing how you have the equipment and using whatever you want in each hand could make your character a destruction machine. Just as big as the hand assigning, is the addition of the dragon shouts. As you go through the world you find ruins with the ancient language of dragons, as you learn these words you can combine them into moves called “dragon shouts”. To activate your ability to use them though, you have to collect the souls of dragons you have defeated. These shouts range in ability, one gives you shockwave as you yell it, another gives you a short speed dash forward, while one even allows you to call down lightning to strike down your enemies. These dragon shouts give you even more options in combat, and the effects are bound to be cool. Discovering brand new shouts will be an exciting experience, but they won’t be easy to acquire.
