The Mortal Kombat franchise has landed on a variety of platforms over the years, but tablets and smartphones haven’t come into play – until now. Any gamer worth their salt knows Mortal Kombat X is on the way, and NetherRealm has announced that a Mortal Kombat X Mobile Game is coming along with it.

Before you get too excited, you’ll want to know that the Mortal Kombat X Mobile Game isn’t a full-fledged fighter or port of the upcoming console game. Read to cringe? It’s actually a freemium card-based fighting game set in the world of Mortal Kombat. Multiplayer team combat is mentioned along with card collecting and cross-connectivity between the console game and mobile version.

Little is known about the gameplay behind Mortal Kombat X Mobile, so we’re not ready to count this one out yet. The card-based mechanic could certainly be cool considering the cast of characters in Mortal Kombat, and we’re going to assume there’s a degree of control to the fighting and it’s not a straight simulation. Either way, Fatalities and X-Rays were mentioned and there’s said to be a mix of characters from the past and present.

Mortal Kombat X is set to arrive on April 14th, and we’re going to assume the Mortal Kombat X Mobile Game will roll out on the same day or soon after launch. As its tied into the console game, we don’t expect any “exclusive” shenanigans from the app stores. Stay tuned, and we’ll have more on the Mortal Kombat mobile game as soon as it’s released.
