Our choice for the best of the bunch this week comes from Nitrome, and goes by the name of Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire. It’s a game folks on iOS might be familiar with, and it is definitely one of the more interesting takes you’ll see on a drawing game.

Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire is a game about balloons, blocks and wizards. You play a wizard tasked with defending a wizardly kingdom from an onslaught of enemies brought in by balloon. Right off the bat, you know you’re dealing with a different type of game, and it becomes more evident once you’re told how to pop that first balloon.magic.touch-1

When the game starts, enemies begin floating down from above and each is hanging onto a balloon. If one manages to touch the ground, it’s game over. You can keep this from happening with your wizardly ways and the power of a finger as you simply need to draw the symbol on each balloon to pop it. As you’d expect, things start out fairly simple…

As you pop balloons, the symbols become more difficult to draw and it gets pretty hectic quickly. The gameplay is as straightforward as it gets, but there are some interesting power-ups available in the shop. Any coins earned through played (or purchased) can be used to buy a special, which will spice things up a bit and extend your game.

The power-ups are varied, and just as wizardly as you’d expect. One allows you to turn folks into Frogs while another summons a dragon. Want something a little more tame? How about lightning or the ability to slow time to a crawl? By the numbers, there eight power-ups in Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire and two unlockable backgrounds. It may not sound like much, but it will take you a while to get them all unless you play Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire 24/7.magic.touch-2

We love it when developers mash several different genres together, and Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire is one of the more unusual combinations we have seen. It’s also one of the funnest and it can keep you entertained for hours on end. The game itself is free to play, but there are some IAP’s if you want to get a leg up or kill the ads. We highly recommend Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire, and you can pick it up for free on Google Play.
