Evoland is an interesting little Indie that’s been moving towards a mobile release since back in 2013. It may have taken a while to get here, but it was certainly worth the wait – especially if you dig old-school RPG’s.

Shiro Games Evoland is hands down the most unique RPG you’re likely to play. The game is about the evolution of gaming over the years, which may sound pretty bland to some. Well, Evoland is anything but bland as it takes you through the history of gaming one mechanic at a time – literally.

Evoland is an RPG, and early on you’ll see what some of those games were like in their earliest forms. It doesn’t go back to the MS-DOS days, but fans of the classic carts from the 80s and 90s will feel right at home. As you progress through the game, you actually unlock different mechanics including the ability to move and swing a sword. You’ll even be able to read sign posts if you find the right treasure chest.

Just like any classic RPG, Evoland drops you into a mythical land where you’ll go around looking for treasure and taking out bad guys. Battles start out very simple, but will get complex as you progress through the game because the battle system changes with the ages as well. We really don’t want to say too much about what’s in store as half the fun is discovering what ability or mechanic lies in the next treasure chest. That said, hang in there if the controls are a bit difficult at first, they do better.

I was just able to jump into Evoland yesterday, so while I haven’t had a chance to spend much time with the game, I love what I’ve seen so far. If you appreciate classic RPG’s and have played then since the NES days, you will love this game. I’m not sure how younger gamers will feel about this one yet, but if you are of a certain age, Evoland is a must buy type of game. If you want to give it a whirl, you can pick up Shinto Games Evoland for $4.99 on Google Play or the App Store.
