If you are of a certain age, you may have fond memories of the old Friday the 13th video game. A few days ago, word broke that a new Friday the 13th game was in the works, and it’s pretty damned exciting if you’re a fan of the franchise. If you think it will be an 8-bit love letter to the original, you’d be wrong and very surprised by the direction of the new game.
The new Friday the 13th game is apparently a co-op and competitive multiplayer affair that lets one person play Jason while the others play his prey. Definitely not what we expected. Absolutely nothing else was revealed in terms of the gameplay, but it opens up some interesting possibilities depending on what platforms it gets released on.
The game will pull references from the film franchise while mixing in new material from the upcoming Friday the 13th TV series as well. Details are also light on the show, but the when it was announced last April, it was said to be a dramatic series that re-imagines Jason in different time periods. That sounds like an absolute plan for disaster, and we hope the Friday the 13th game won’t draw too much from that well.
It’s going to be a big year for fans of Jason and Friday the 13th between the TV series, a new movie and the first game in 25 years. As for the game, it is expected to arrive in October of this year, but more details are expected soon.
