World of Tanks Blitz is a game about tanks, and blowing folks up in said tanks. It’s an online only affair as well, so if you’re looking for a game with a lengthy campaign, you’ll want to look elsewhere. That said, it’s a freemium multiplayer game done right, and you don’t have to like tanks to have a blast with Blitz…
The gameplay and premise behind World of Tanks Blitz is as simple as it gets. Try to capture the other teams base without dying, reap the rewards, and upgrade your tanks. The controls consist of a virtual joystick and some buttons that let you fire, repair and enter Sniper Mode. Blitz lets you customize the controls to an extent, but that tanks drive just like you’d expect them to for the most part.
In Sniper Mode you can see opposing tanks weak points, and it’s something you’ll definitely want to take advantage of when you actually have time to aim. That may not be very often depending on the matchup – they are random and it’s basically a 7 on 7 deathmatch with bases. If you happen to bite the dust early, you can leave the battle and jump straight into another tank. The battles usually last between 2-5 minutes, and you’ll be rewarded whether you win or lose. Obviously more if you win.
The rewards you earn on the battlefield can be spent if your garage. From there you can upgrade your tanks or crew, buy equipment and stock up on ammo. Ammo is by far the most important, and the most expensive depending on what kinds of rounds you choose to use. You can purchase new tank upgrades with experience earned in battle, and there are plenty of different ways to go on the tech tree.
World of Tanks Blitz gives you well over 100 different tanks from four different countries with the United States, England, Russia, and Germany. Each country/tank has its own tech tree, and there are a lot of options to choose from. The selection is a lot sparser when it comes to the Equipment, Consumables, and Ammo unfortunately. In a nutshell, there is a lot of depth in Blitz and fans of the PC version will be pleased.
As mentioned, World of Tanks Blitz is a freemium game, and while that may make you groan, the folks at Wargaming have handled this one with care. There are plenty of options available if you want to spend a few bucks, but you don’t have to pay to play and there are no hindrances like stamina meters. The coin packs are reasonably priced, and Blitz is also very generous with the XP. It’s really one of the best freemium models we’ve seen since the whole pay to play trend started.
Like Tanks? If so, you’ll love World of Tanks Blitz as it’s everything you could want from a tank-based battler and it’s totally free. Fans of the original were probably a bit concerned about the mobile port, but those concerns were put to rest when the iOS port dropped and the Android version is just as awesome.
