Zachtronics first grabbed our attention with SpaceChem, and now they’ve brought a popular card battling game to Android by the name of Ironclad Tactics. As the name implies, there’s plenty of “Iron” involved, but probably not in the way you’re thinking.

Ironclad Tactics is tactical card game that takes place during the Civil War, but it’s not as simple as the North vs. the South anymore. Automaton’s are involved in the alternate history of the game, and there is an engaging storyline to follow that’s presented in-between stages in campaign mode. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of cut scenes or comics that slow down the action, but it’s handled perfectly in Ironclad Tactics.

In terms of gameplay, there’s a lot to take in, but the tutorial does a great job of walking you though things in the first few battles. The action is lane-based to a degree, and you’ll use cards to control your automaton on the battlefield. Ironclad Tactics offers up several different modes of play as well, and the majority of the unlockables seem like they can be obtained through playing instead of through in-app purchases.

While I didn’t spend much time with Ironclad Tactics, I really like what I’ve seen thus far. The alternative history storyline is interesting, the artwork is great, and the gameplay is refreshing compared to some of the other card-based battlers out there. It’s also free, so there’s no reason to not give it try if you dig tactical games. Hit up the link below to snag Zachtronics Ironclad Tactics for free.
