Mistwalker (and it’s founder Hironobu Sakaguchi) was a pretty prominent developer last generation. They gave us Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360 and The Last Story on Wii, as well as a bunch of great RPGs for the DS. Unfortunately, other than a few iPhone games we haven’t seen a whole lot of output from this RPG dream-team in the last few years. That wait wait is almost over, if a recent tweet by Microsoft’s Phil Spencer is to be believed.
Twitter user @SenninSage asked the VP of Microsoft Game Studios when we can expect to hear more about Sakaguchi’s Xbox One JRPG, and he replied with a mysterious “Tuesday…”. While we’re not sure if he means this upcoming Tuesday or not, it’s at least confirmation that Mistwalker’s new game is under development. As a fan of RPGs (especially of the J variety) I personally can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.
Mistwalker was founded in 2004 by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Originally funded by Microsoft, Mistwalker is more of a planning studio than a full on development studio; They design game scenarios and music and outsource the actual development to other studios. Their first game, Blue Dragon, was released for the Xbox 360 in 2006 and they have since gone on the create several role-playing games for Microsoft and Nintendo hardware. In the last few years they have focused on mobile games, including the action game Party Wave and tower-defense Blade Guardian, while they have no currently announced next generation games. The “Tuesday” that Phil Spencer refers will be the first we hear of the company’s new game.
