Back in October of last year we covered a Kickstarter game by the name of Fright Fight, this week it finally dropped for Android and iOS. It’s been billed as Super Smash Bros. for mobiles, and after spending a bit of time with the game, we’re back to give you the skinny…
Fright Fight is an online brawler that’s definitely in the vein of SSB. You get to control one of four monsters in battles to the death, and you’ll want to think long and hard on who you’re going to pick as you’re going to be stuck with them for a while. I went with the Grim Reaper for his reach advantage, and quickly found out most everyone else was thinking the same thing.
As for the gameplay, it’s simple and effective for the most part. You slide your finger to move, tap to attack, and swipe up to jump. There are some special moves and charge attacks for each character, but those are the basics. Fright Fight is definitely accessible to everyone with its control scheme, and things get pretty nutty when there are four of you bouncing around a smartphone screen at the same time. The matches are around 3 minutes (don’t have much time to look at the clock) and the winner is determined by the player with the most kills.
Fright Fight is a freemium game, and you will see your fair share of IAP’s in the game. If you want to switch or unlock additional characters, it’ll set you back around $4 bucks or 20,000 coins which comes out to around $8 if you buy them. You can earn them of course, but I haven’t spent enough time with the game yet to see how that plays out.
A lot of folks had high hopes for Fright Fight during its Kickstarter run, and while the campaign wasn’t a success, the game found some funding and is ready to go. Fright Fight is a solid brawler that works well on the mobile, but I would keep those SSB comparisons light as there’s not a lot to this one yet with only four fighters and no variety with the backdrops.
That said, it’s free and fun, just don’t go into things expecting a mobile version of Super Smash Brothers. If you want to give it a whirl, you can pick up Fright Fight for free on Google Play and the App Store.
