Generally we don’t run any ‘pick of the week’ articles on a Tuesday, but every once in a while you come across a game that’s just too cool for school. This week that game is Darkest Dungeon from Red Hook Studios, and it’s our Kickstarter Pick of the Week.
Darkest Dungeon is a game about heroes, but they are not your typical bunch of sword swingers. These little adventurers have some issues, and you’ll have to keep tabs on their spirits along with their health thanks to the game’s “Affliction System.” Yup, Darkest Dungeon puts the focus on your heroes instead of their equipment and that’s just one interesting aspect of the game.
As Darkest Dungeon is a Dungeon Crawler, you can expect plenty of monsters, loot and gear. You can also look forward to permadeath if you’re not careful. As for the characters and classes… how do Plague Doctors, Lepers, and Occultists sound? You can keep your Mages and Paladins, I’ll take a Plague Doctor any day. Very cool.
Darkest Dungeon hasn’t been kicking long, but they’ve already amassed $195,668 of their $75,000 goal at the time of this writing. It’s going to get made, but there’s no need to let off the gas as there are some insanely cool stretch goals to shoot for. Brigands, Boss variants, and new character classes have already been added, but a new dungeon, character customization, and Steam workshop integration are all on the table if more stretch goals are met.
The game is scheduled to hit Windows PC’s first and head to Mac’s soon after. The developers have their eye on several other platforms as well depending on how things progress including Linux, 3DS, Vita, tablets, and Steam OS. Barring any setbacks, you should be able to get your hands on Darkest Dungeon in January of 2015.
If we even need to tell you why you should fund this one, you’re probably better off playing a city builder on your mobile. Darkest Dungeon is a different type of Dungeon Crawler, and you have to dig the artwork, characters and dark gothic vibe.
