Towards the end of January we learned that Disney was working on a new Star Wars game by the name of Star Wars: Assault Team and that it was close to completion. The game got a soft-launch for Android in ‘select regions’ on February 8th and after spending the weekend with the game we’re back to give you a brief rundown on what to expect when Star Wars: Assault Team goes global.
Star Wars: Assault Team is a turn-based CCG that brings a new story to life using those old characters we all know and love. The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who’s played a collectible card game on their mobile, and while there’s nothing fancy in terms of the mechanics (tap-based), strategy does become a factor as you progress through the game.
There are several different types of missions to take on in Star Wars: Assault Team including Storyline and Special missions, but the Arena is where we spent most of our time. The Arena lets you fight other players for trophies, and those trophies can be traded in for Hero Crates. The crates are your bread and butter as that’s where you’ll get the majority of your cards.
Star Wars: Assault Team is a freemium game, and it’s energy-based so you’re going to have to deal with some timers and IAP’s. Nothing we haven’t seen before, especially in card games of this nature. As for the cards, there are a lot of them so you should be able to play with most of your favorite characters from the original trilogy. The cards are tiered, and the packs/boxes range from bronze to diamond.
While some people may frown on another Star Wars CCG being released after the mediocre Star Wars Force Collection, Star Wars: Assault Team has been solid so far and it’s a game fans will enjoy. That being said, it’s a ‘freemium’ collectible card game, so be prepared.
Star Wars: Assault Team is scheduled for a wide release this spring, but it could be sooner depending on how the soft launch goes. Even though we normally don’t review CCG’s, rest assured we’ll be back for a full review as soon as it goes live in the US. It’s Star Wars, what can you do…
