Created by Tiger Telematics (no relation to Tiger Electronics), the Gizmondo was released in 2005 and featured a dazzling array of features for it’s day: bluetooth, GPS, 1.3 Megapixel camera, and a blazingly fast processor. Some journalists expected the Gizmondo to overtake Nintendo’s DS and Sony’s PSP and become king of the portables, but the market apparently disagreed. The Gizmondo was only sold through mall kiosks for an insane price of $400 and had only 8 games released Stateside. Less than 25,000 units were sold, making Tiger’s little handheld quite possibly the worst selling console ever made.
The most interesting aspect of the Gizmondo was that the entire venture was really just a front for the Swedish Mafia. Seriously, take a look at that link. You couldn’t make up a story this good.
