RDI Video Systems was the company behind the enormously popular games Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace. Seeing as these two LaserDisc based games were successful, RDI decided to go ahead and build a LaserDisc-based console that would be the home to games similar to their two previous hits. Unfortunately for them the genre was just a passing fad and the audience of 1985 (the year of the console’s release) was no longer interested in that particular brand of interactive movies. Unfortunately for us, the Halcyon launched at the absolutely insane price of $2500 (over $5200 in today’s dollars). The company didn’t even last another 6 months.
A grand total of two games were released for the Halcyon (neither Dragon’s Lair nor Space Ace ever came to the platform) and nowadays the system is so rare and unknown that even a hardcore videogame collector such as myself has never even met anyone who’s seen one in person.
