If you grew up in the 80s, you probably played your fair share of DOS games. California Dreams published a little game back in 1989 called Street Rod, and it’s a title a lot of us remember very fondly. If you loved that old racing game, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a new Kickstarter project inspired by it and it goes by the name of Hot Rod Hustle.
Hot Rod Hustle is the creation of Tyler Thomas, and it’s inspired by classics like Hot Rod I, II and Motor City Online. HRH takes elements from those games and combines them into something new as you’ll be able to build a vehicle from the ground up and go for broke in drag or road races. Pink Slip racing is included as are motorcycles and multiplayer. That’s right, Hot Rod Hustle is a cross-platform racing MMO. Got your attention yet?
The game may be a lot about the racing, but it has a stylish comic book storyline with a cool 50s vibe as you can see from the pics. There’s also mention of mini-games to earn a little cash, and you can even put together your own online car club full of greasers. Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in the world of Hot Rod Hustle, and it looks to be a game that will keep you busy for ages between racing and customizing your ride.
The Hot Rod Hustle Kickstarter is nearing its end with 9 days to go at the time of this writing. Unfortunately, the team has only been able to bring in around $8,357 of their $23,000 goal thus far so they need your help to hit the mark. There are plenty of cool rewards to snag, and lots of great stretch goals (community auctions!!) if they hit their funding goal and get a big surge at the end.
If you dig Hot Rod’s and love the drag racing games of yesteryear, Hot Rod Hustle is well worth a look. If the game manages to reach the finish line, they expect to have the game out sometime in August of this year and it’ll be available for iOS, Android, PC, Linux, and Macs.
