Last week I gave you a look at the singleplayer campaign and a quick rundown of what we know so far about Naughty Dog’s ambitious new IP: The Last Of Us. Today saw the official release of the multiplayer trailer and some information has been revealed.

The multiplayer mode, dubbed Factions, sees players fill the shoes of either the Hunters or the Fireflies. The game features two game modes, Supply Raid and Survivors. Supply Raid gives each team 20 reinforcements, and once those lives are gone its sudden death. Survivors features no respawns and it’s the best of 7 rounds, so think Warzone in Gears Of War – fast and extremely intense gameplay.

What seems most appealing and makes the game stick out, is the tension. Modern multiplayer seems to all be run and gun, die, respawn, repeat. In The Last Of Us, players need to approach each corner with caution, checking their surroundings and constantly watching their backs, as lives are limited.

The trailer shows us more of the intense, close and fluid gameplay that we’ve seen from previous demos.  We’re also shown the new ability to craft items, like molotovs and smoke grenades, seamlessly in game. The multiplayer is currently bearing a striking resemblance to Gears, with the modes, downing enemies and then brutal executions, which in my opinion, can only be a good thing.

While multiplayer is certainly a nice addition, sometimes it’s really not required. I just hope it turns out like the Mass Effect 3 and Assassins Creed multiplayer, two single player games that were already amazing, made even better by a unique (and more importantly fun), multiplayer experience. To be honest, I can’t see myself playing much of the multiplayer but I guess I’m just going to have to wait and see.

Check out the trailer and leave your thoughts below. Does a game require multiplayer for you to consider the purchase? Or are you content with renting it and plowing through the campaign?
